ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a multimedia artist. As I came of age, I began a series of digital illustrations exploring sadness, anger, longing, and fear. My work on the series is ongoing and populated by recurring symbolic characters such as a blue woman, a pink mist, an orange bird, and a green horned animal. Translated into sculpture, each one of these characters is an open-ended form that continues to evolve as they are redrawn and remade. I am not bound to any one material or method. I’ll utilize anything: wood, video, wax, feathers, plastic, foil, and hair. I weld, felt, paint, animate, video, cast, and draw. Whatever it takes. Within every piece, I return to the same symbolic characters, from different angles, with different materials, at different scales. As I have continued to grow as an artist, exploring personal symbols in this way has served as a rite of passage in a culture where none is provided.
